So-called “staged accidents” are groups or individuals who intentionally cause traffic accidents to extort, intimidate, or rob the motorists involved.

Although this type of crime has been more common in cities like Mexico City and the State of Mexico, in recent weeks it has begun to generate concern in Cancún due to citizen complaints and videos circulating on social media.

Have staged accidents arrived in Cancún?

To date, authorities have not officially confirmed the operation of staged accidents in Cancún. However, various citizen reports, complaints, and videos circulating on social media have generated concern among motorists.

The case that occurred in Superblock 230 is one of the most recent. According to the complaint, several individuals allegedly took advantage of a traffic accident to intimidate, assault, and rob a rideshare driver.

Furthermore, videos circulating on social media show alleged accident fraudsters attempting to pressure drivers into handing over cash in exchange for not involving insurance companies or the authorities.

Due to the widespread dissemination of these cases, there are already warnings about a possible recurrence of this modus operandi in various parts of Cancún, especially on less-traveled streets, in poorly lit areas, and during off-peak hours.

How do accident fraudsters operate in Cancún?

According to reports, after an accident, the alleged perpetrators try to prevent the intervention of authorities or insurance companies and demand that the situation be resolved with cash payments, which can reach thousands of pesos.

In some cases, one person accuses the driver of causing the accident, and then other individuals arrive to reinforce this version of events and pressure the victim with threats or intimidation in order to obtain money immediately.

What should you do if you encounter an accident fraudster in Cancún?

If a suspicious collision occurs, experts and authorities recommend remaining calm and avoiding any confrontation. Most importantly, do not hand over cash or accept any agreements under pressure.

It is advisable to stay inside your vehicle, keep the doors locked, record the incident with your cell phone if possible, and immediately call 911, your insurance company, and the traffic authorities.

It is also recommended to note the license plate number, the characteristics of those involved, and any other evidence that may be useful in a later investigation. Most importantly, do not make any informal agreements and always wait for the insurance company and the authorities to intervene.
