A conflict over the occupation of a home ended in tragedy in the Villas Otoch housing development. A Cuban man, who had allegedly occupied the property for a year, reportedly opened fire on its owners when they went to collect the keys that he himself had offered to hand over.
The incident occurred Friday night on Abedul Street, Region 247. Residents reported at least 10 gunshots, activating the red alert code in the area. One man died at the scene; a woman and another man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.
The survivors attempted to make their own way to a hospital in a gray Jetta, but they were intercepted by police officers and ERUM paramedics on Kabah Avenue and were subsequently taken to the General Hospital. The alleged attacker fled, and so far there have been no arrests.
The case has reopened the discussion about the lack of swift legal mechanisms to resolve home-invasion disputes in Quintana Roo, leaving property owners without effective protection while the occupation continues for months.
