Beach residents and tourists don’t know whether to be wary of criminals or the municipal police.

A tourist shared on social media the bitter experience he had visiting this tourist destination, which is increasingly plagued by crime and extortion by its municipal police.

This is the visitor’s post:

“A corrupt officer tried to extort me by claiming I was speeding and forced me to go to an ATM to pay him 5,000 pesos in cash. He threatened to confiscate my license, and when I refused, he started yelling at my wife and me. Because of people like him, Mexico has a bad reputation.”

Meanwhile, the mayor, Estefanía Mercado, is squandering millions of pesos trying to project a nonexistent image of tranquility.
