Quintana Roo Gov. Carlos Joaquin says tourism for Cancun, Riviera Maya and the rest of the state could see a reopening between June 8 and 10.
The Cancun tourism board originally announced a June 1 reopening date.
Adding to the confusion, 15 hotels in Cancun announced they were sticking to the June 1 date, a claim countered by the department of tourism.
“It’s not true that they’ll be able to reopen, since the companies themselves don’t determine that, nor the market. It will be the federal and state governments,” said Tourism Minister Marisol Vanegas Pérez.
Carlos Joaquin said that tourism is an essential activity for the state and that the government will fight for the nearly 80,000 jobs that will be gradually recovered.
The June 1 date now applies to service providers and workers who will arrive to get ready for visitors.
He stressed during a public address that for the opening to happen, protocols and hygiene measures must be followed.
A COVID-free certification platform has drawn more than 1,983 companies.
Will tourists be willing to come? The governor is hopeful after seeing an Expedia survey indicating “Cancun flights” is one of the top five searches on the platform.
Playa del Carmen, Cancun and Isla Mujeres were announced as three of the most internationally sought-after destinations.
