Procurement of two kidneys and two corneas carried out in Cancun
After the critical stage of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Quintana Roo was able to carry out the procurement of two kidneys and two corneas that will serve to improve the quality of life of other people who were waiting to be transplanted.
Moisés Campos Navarro, Organ and Tissue Donation Hospital Coordinator of the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 17, in Cancun, reported that thanks to the generosity of the family of a woman who presented brain death, this multi-organ donation could be carried out.
He explained that in a coordinated manner the transplant medical staff of the High Specialty Medical Unit Hospital de Especialidad de Mérida and a multidisciplinary team from HGR 17, carried out the successful obtaining of the organs that will be used by beneficiaries of the Yucatan Peninsula.
For its part, the Head of the Transplant Program of the UMAE mentioned that to promote the culture of organ donation it is required that the subject be discussed as a family, knowing that an organ and tissue donation can benefit and change the lives of a hundred of people.
He explained that in order to be a donor, biosecurity protocols must be followed, in order to avoid contagion of Covid-19, both in donors and recipients; meet requirements that are evaluated by specialist doctors, to corroborate that the organs and tissues are suitable for transplantation and have previously verified the diagnosis of brain death of the donor.
The donor woman was dismissed with applause from the hospital’s health personnel, in recognition of the invaluable decision of her and her relatives, who said they were proud to preserve and improve the quality of life of other people.
