The government of Belize plans to reopen its borders with Mexico on May 31, which is expected to see economic reactivation in the region that borders the city of Chetumal, Quintana Roo, in addition to the migratory flow, after a year of restrictions.

Belizean authorities confirmed that the land customs of Santa Elena will be opened, in addition to the maritime customs of the island of San Pedro, which before the emergency was used exclusively for the crossing of tourism.

The land customs that it has with the country of Guatemala, called Benque Viejo del Carmen and Punta Gorda, also open their doors.

For its part, the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) of Chetumal stressed that it will be possible to have a greater economic impact in the capital with the arrival of tourists who will seek to reach Belize.

Belize closed its borders as of March of last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and as of October 1 of last year, it reactivated air operations.
