Geny Canto Canto, the national commissioner of the Transport Union of the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM), dismissed the idea of a persecution against mototaxi operators in the city, despite the recent attack on one of the union members. In an interview, the union leader stated that there is no fear among union members of potential aggression against operators. However, she emphasized that there is a crisis of public safety on the island.
“There is no reason for us to believe that there is a persecution against us; I completely rule that out. Nor do I think it is against all mototaxi drivers,” she expressed. She acknowledged that, like most citizens, mototaxi drivers are exposed to recent violent incidents on the island. However, attributing involvement in risky situations to union members is unfounded.
Canto Canto described this attack as an “extraordinary event” and avoided speculating on the motives. She clarified that investigations are already in the hands of the authorities. “All I can say about the operator is that he has been a hardworking, punctual man, and we have no negative references regarding him,” she added.
The interviewee mentioned that they will continue taking precautions, such as being careful about where they pick up passengers and providing services only before 10:30 PM. Additionally, she expressed confidence that the presence of state police will help curb the outbreaks of violence in the municipality.
It’s worth noting that, after the attack, there were reports that the operator had lost his life. However, the union leader clarified that he is currently hospitalized at the Social Security clinic, where he underwent surgery and is in recovery.
