It is pointed out that, during the voting, the electorate did not focus on the sexual orientation of the candidates, but rather the vote went towards the parties.
Linger Méndez, an activist from the sexual diversity community, commented that only Saulo Aguilar, from the Morena-PVEM-PT coalition, won the local deputy position for district 15.
“There was participation, such as Adriana Carrera, in local district 4; Chacón, for federal district 3; Daniel Aguilar and Esteban Díaz, for district 5. They leave happy, with a good taste in their mouths, because they had good acceptance from the citizens (…) But only Saulo was elected as a deputy by relative majority, the others did not.”
He pointed out that, during the voting, the electorate did not focus on the sexual orientation of the candidates, but rather the vote went towards the political parties, so he dismissed that such results are results of homophobia.
“There were people who went for the party, who did not care about the candidate and there were those who did look at the candidate, but without major relevance. Both factors influenced these candidates, but I do not see homophobia as such, but rather there were people who voted for the party and who were not interested in who the candidate was.”
He indicated that it will be up to each of them to continue with their political career or “they stay with the experience and keep working,” because they are people coming from different collectives.
Likewise, he emphasized that it is very contradictory what happened in the campaign with the aggressions that the sector of the sexual diversity community faces, so he commented that work is needed to prevent there being more harassment and mistreatment towards said sector of the population.
Regarding the results of the elections held last June 2, Linger Méndez congratulated the virtual winners and trusted that they will do a good job both in the state Congress and in the 11 municipalities.
He trusted that, during those administrations, there will be an approach with the collectives to promote the agenda of the members of the sexual diversity of the state in order to respect their rights and end the aggressions and other mistreatments against them.
