On the upcoming 3rd of May, the Canadian airline Air Canada will initiate a new route from Toronto to the new Tulum International Airport, which points to an increase in visitors from that country to the Riviera Maya and possibly to destinations in the south of Quintana Roo, stated David Ortiz Mena, president of the Tulum Hotel Association.
The hotel leader emphasized that the “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” airport quickly surpassed all expectations, both due to the multiple domestic flights and the high influx achieved shortly after its inauguration, as well as the addition of international routes, first from the United States, and now from Canada, which will soon be followed by Europe.
“Let’s remember that Canada is one of the main markets for Tulum and the Riviera Maya, and the influx of these visitors will surely increase in 2024 and 2025,” he noted. Interestingly, he added, this is a new route that does not subtract from Cancún, and it is not seasonal, as Air Canada is fully committed to the Tulum Airport.
Ortiz Mena also referred to the notorious case of the taxi driver who attempted to charge a Canadian visitor a thousand dollars for transferring him from one terminal to another within the Cancún International Airport.
“It’s very regrettable; in this situation, there was a consequence: the responsible party has already been detained, and I understand that his license is in the process of being canceled,” he pointed out. “The truth is that we do a lot to promote our destinations to allow such acts,” he concluded.
