Tulum Airport loses another airline: changes route to Cancun

Lufthansa’s subsidiary, Discover, will change its route from Frankfurt to Tulum Airport to Cancún Airport starting next winter.

“The airport (in Tulum) has a lot of potential, but it’s always a combination of many factors. For now, we’re focusing on Cancún,” the airline reported.

Apparently, one of the drawbacks for passengers at Tulum Airport is the limited availability of ground transportation, and transfer times have not been as shortened as expected, a consequence of the lack of a ring road around Tulum, according to A21.

Discovery Airlines launched the route during the 2024-2025 winter season, but is now changing it to Cancún Airport.

Tulum Airport recently announced that it would extend its incentives for three years to attract more airlines and flights to Quintana Roo. The discounts apply to the Airport Use Fee (TUA) and to the apron services that the airport terminals provide to aircraft on the ground. (Tulum Airport will extend incentives to airlines for 3 years.)

“This will allow many airlines to continue finding opportunities to open flights to the Mexican Caribbean, benefiting Tulum and the Riviera Maya, but also to the south of the state, such as Maya Ka’an, Mahahual, Bacalar, and the Mayan region of the state,” said Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo (Sedetur).
