COVID-19 in Mexico: These are the current symptoms and this is how you should isolate yourself if you get them.

Given the increase in COVID cases in Mexico, UNAM launched a series of recommendations on symptoms that you should be aware of.

COVID-19 is back in Mexico, and although the global emergency due to the virus ended on Friday, May 5, the health authorities recommended the use of face masks in closed spaces.

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) was in charge of issuing the warning to the community in general, this weeks before the start of the 2023-2024 school year at different school levels and waiting for the classes to be completely face-to-face, as It happened in the last cycle.

Given the increase in active cases of COVID, UNAM issued a series of recommendations on what to do in case of infection to avoid spreading the virus and affecting people who suffer from diseases or face more risky situations in case of contagion.

What are the symptoms of COVID that you should be aware of?

The UNAM recommends isolating yourself in case of presenting symptoms of COVID that are related to an acute respiratory illness. These are:

  • flu.
  • Cold.
  • Cough.
  • Sore throat.
  • Fever.

However, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends being aware of other symptoms that appear after the spread of COVID, such as:

  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Fatigue.
  • Muscle pains.
  • Headache.
  • Loss of smell or taste.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Medline Plus, a library of medicine in the United States, indicates that other existing symptoms in infected people are chest pain, inability to wake up, and that lips, chest, and face take on pale, gray, or bluish colors.

In case of having the above symptoms, it is necessary that you go to the doctor in order to have care as soon as possible.

The medical authorities explain that the symptoms appear from two to 14 days after the interaction with an infected person. Therefore, it is important that you notify the people you lived with if you tested positive.

How long should you isolate yourself if you get COVID?

UNAM recommended that if you test positive for COVID, you should isolate yourself for three to five days depending on the evolution of the virus.

The recommendations for carrying out the insulation are:

  • Seek medical attention in order to monitor the evolution of the virus and identify any possible complications in time.
  • Wear a face mask at all times while you are at home.

  • Substance use disorders.
  • Tuberculosis.
