Grupo Xcaret is requesting clear regulations regarding the use of Mayan cultural heritage, so that it can comply with requirements based on a set of rules “and not on the opinion of one or two people,” stated Carlos Constandse Madrazo, vice president and shareholder of the company, during a press conference held by Coparmex Quintana Roo.
Regarding the ongoing litigation over the use of Mayan cultural symbols and elements, which led to the cancellation of the Sacred Mayan Journey, Constandse, who is also vice president of the state Coparmex, indicated that they have already requested assistance from various organizations to achieve regulations on this matter, according to Noticaribe.
“If there’s something to be done, let it be done, but based on regulations, not according to the decision of one or two people, or lawyers, who aren’t fully aware of the damage this could cause to our promotion,” he stated, adding that Quintana Roo is known for its Mayan heritage and denying it is a mistake, as REPORTUR.mx has been revealing (Xcaret receives support from the candidate to succeed Lezama as leader of QRoo).
“Regarding the symbolism we and other groups use, we maintain that the damage isn’t to Xcaret, but to the entire tourism industry,” he declared, while also lamenting the cancellation of the Sacred Mayan Journey, an event that cost them a lot of money and generated no revenue, in which nearly 400 people participated.
For her part, Jovita Portillo Navarro, president of Coparmex Quintana Roo, declared that this situation (the litigation between Xcaret and the National Copyright Institute and the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation’s refusal to grant them an injunction) is a “huge blow to our state and our country.”
Senator Eugenio ‘Gino’ Segura, president of the Senate Tourism Committee and a candidate to succeed Mara Lezama as governor of Quintana Roo, had defended Grupo Xcaret, stating that tourism is a source of many jobs, and adding that he greatly respects its president, Miguel Quintana Pali, with whom he has worked in coordination.
