Playa del Carmen.- A group of citizens and foreign residents of this city have begun a campaign and collect signatures to have a beach where dogs are allowed, known as “Pet Friendly.”
Sergio Beristain, animal rescuer and member of “Dog Beach Playa del Carmen” explained in an interview that they already have 1,200 signatures to leave the beach of the Colosio neighborhood, in front of the “Chen Zubul” coastal property, which another citizen group also struggle to preserve in a natural state.
Playa del Carmen is promoted as a “pet friendly” destination and tourists are encouraged to bring their pets, but as soon as they take them to the beach “they are surrounded by police who demand they leave and even threaten to take their dog away, which is a bad image for the city”, commented the activist.
The members of this group propose leaving the Colosio beach as “pet friendly” because it has worked that way for decades, informally. There are many foreigners and locals who walk their pets there, without being disturbed.
“This beach has the potential, it always has. The other beaches like this are also kept free of dogs and we all win,” he commented.
The man from Playa, who says he has lived in the Colosio neighborhood for many years, pointed out that “Dog Beach Playa del Carmen” also supports those who want to rescue the “Chen Zubul” land, since it is the last great green lung of the city, but that is at risk because there is interest in building a hotel there.
“It is an area full of coatis, chachalacas, all the fauna you can imagine,” he said. “When you get to the beach, it doesn’t have any development, it’s beautiful. It has a mangrove, which helps clean the water.”
On the other hand, he pointed out that this group, which is dedicated to getting pets off the street, sterilizing them and finding them a home, is already working with experts from various states to develop a comprehensive project for the well-being of stray dogs.
“We want to have healthy dogs, so that the families are also healthy,” he asserted.
