In light of the imminent arrival of the first hurricane of the season, Beryl, which has quickly reached category 4, the state of Quintana Roo is constantly monitoring its path and preparing for a possible impact.
Today, around noon, this hydrometeorological phenomenon has impacted the coasts of Granada and Santa Lucía with sustained winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour.
In response to this situation, the Secretary of Education of Quintana Roo, Carlos Gorocica Moreno, assured that the 642 schools designated as anticyclone shelters in the state are in optimal conditions to face any eventuality during the hurricane season.
Gorocica Moreno explained that, despite the recent atypical rains that caused puddles in some school yards and entrances, these effects do not compromise the capacity of the educational facilities that are enabled to function as shelters if necessary.
In the first stage of the hydrometeorological contingency, it is planned to open 104 shelters, which would serve 25,000 to 28,000 people. If necessary, the 642 available shelters would be opened to serve almost 80,000 citizens, including the first pet-friendly shelter in Cancun.
First pet-friendly shelter in Quintana Roo
The pet-friendly shelter in Cancun is one of the first of its kind nationwide and already has the recognition by the National Coordination of Civil Protection to be able to operate in the event of a hydrometeorological contingency.
The way it works is that when the authorities authorize the activation of the shelters, those interested must appear at the site to register and through an evaluation by the Animal Welfare area, the spaces will be assigned.
Dogs and cats are assigned to different rooms with their owner, the rest of the family is accommodated in adjacent rooms within the same shelter, remembering that this space is located in the Villas Otoch subdivision in the Ek Balam kindergarten and primary school.
The secretary assured that Quintana Roo is preparing in this way to face the challenges that may arise during the hurricane season and of course in light of the current blue alert in which the state remains due to the proximity of Beryl to the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean.
