A devastating incident has occurred on a Cancun beach, where gunmen on jet skis opened fire at a rival drug dealer, resulting in the tragic death of a 12-year-old local boy. The shooting, which took place near the Riu Cancun hotel on Playa Caracol, has left authorities and locals reeling.

According to Mexican prosecutors, the shooters were targeting a rival drug dealer engaged in a dispute over sales, but their bullets unfortunately hit an innocent bystander. The 12-year-old boy was lying on a lounge chair with his family when he was struck by stray bullets. He was rushed to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“It’s so sad that things like these happen,” a person close to the victim’s family told Mexican newspaper El Universal, expressing the community’s shock and grief.

This incident marks another example of deadly violence at a Mexican resort in recent years. Territorial disputes between drug dealers have claimed the lives of several tourists along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, including:

* In May, 10 bodies were discovered scattered in Acapulco, a once-glamorous resort city now plagued by cartel-related violence.

* In February, three people were shot dead by gunmen in Acapulco, with one perpetrator fleeing aboard a boat.

* In 2022, two Canadians were killed in Playa del Carmen due to debts between international drug and weapons trafficking gangs.

* In 2021, two tourists were caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between rival dealers in Tulum, resulting in their tragic deaths.

The hotel spokesperson for Riu Cancun emphasized that no guests were injured during the shooting, and the victim was not staying at the hotel.

This senseless tragedy serves as a reminder of the ongoing violence in Mexico’s resort areas and the need for increased security measures to protect both tourists and local residents.
