Cozumel is moving towards improving the tourist experience with the launch of a project that will provide free internet access in the city’s main square, according to Angela Carrillo, municipal director of Tourism and Economic Development. This initiative seeks to facilitate the connection of tourists and residents to digital platforms, improving access to real-time information and promoting the island as a more accessible and modern destination.
The project will initially focus on key areas such as Rafael Melgar Avenue and Benito Juarez Park, two of the most visited spots by tourists. Carrillo explained that the service will allow visitors to use QR codes to access tourist information, such as maps, activity schedules and local recommendations, directly from their mobile devices.
“This project will facilitate the use of digital platforms, which will allow us to improve the interaction of tourists with the city and with Cozumel’s tourist offering,” said the official. Through this initiative, tourists will be able to obtain relevant information instantly, which will enrich their visit and facilitate access to various services.
In addition, Carrillo announced that the Cozumel MySpace digital platform is under development, which will be officially presented at the World Tourism and Travel Summit (WTTS) to be held on November 27 and 28. This platform is designed to support local tour operators and hotels, allowing for better management of services and promotion. The platform will be available in its Android version, thus expanding its reach to a greater number of users.
In the long term, the Directorate of Tourism and Economic Development has planned several promotional projects to strengthen Cozumel’s presence in the Riviera Maya, with the aim of attracting more visitors in the coming years. In particular, the official expressed her confidence that all these efforts will bear fruit in 2025, positioning the island as a more connected and accessible destination.
