In response to complaints from citizens regarding excessive fares for van service on the Tulum-Playa del Carmen route, both the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute and the unions urged people to file formal reports so these cases can be investigated.
Moisés Paul Quijano, general secretary of Untrac Section II, corresponding to Tulum, urged users to file formal complaints to penalize these practices.
According to the union leader, they have received several citizen reports indicating that some operators are charging fares beyond the established rates, especially when passengers have luggage.
“There are cases where the passenger pays their fare, but upon boarding, if they have luggage, they are charged double,” he explained.
He emphasized that all operators are required to carry and display the official fare authorized by the relevant authorities. “The passenger has the right to demand to see the price list. If they detect a higher charge, they should report it,” he stated.
To file a complaint, he recommended that passengers go to the designated representatives at their stop upon arrival at their destination, whether in Playa del Carmen or another point along the route. It is important to provide accurate information, such as the vehicle’s identification number, the bus line, the driver’s name, and the date and time of the incident.
The transportation leader also asked passengers to correctly identify the vehicle, as there are different groups with similar characteristics, such as orange stripes, which could lead to confusion.
“It is essential to verify the route and the vehicle’s markings to avoid pointing the finger at the wrong driver,” he emphasized.
Regarding sanctions, the union leader explained that drivers who commit irregularities can receive penalties ranging from temporary suspensions to permanent dismissal.
“The first offense can result in a three-day suspension; if there is a repeat offense, it increases to six, nine, or even 15 days. In serious cases, the driver can be suspended for a month or permanently dismissed,” he explained.
Finally, he affirmed that the organization remains firmly committed to regulating the service and addressing citizen complaints.
“We cannot allow this type of behavior to affect users or the industry. Anyone who commits an infraction will face the appropriate disciplinary action,” he concluded.
