Cancun drops its passengers by 12.5% ​​while Merida increases them

Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), an international airport operator in Mexico, the United States, and Colombia, reported that total passenger traffic for September 2024 reached 4.9 million, representing a 1.5% decrease compared to the same month in 2023.

According to the regional breakdown, traffic in Mexico showed a decrease of 8.1%, with a total of 2.7 million passengers. Domestic traffic decreased by 4.9%, while international traffic fell by 12.4%. Cancún, one of Asur’s key airports, registered a 12.5% ​​drop in its total traffic, reaching 1.89 million passengers. However, destinations such as Mérida reported an increase of 9.6%, adding 293,515 passengers in September 2024.

At the airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, passenger traffic decreased by 0.8% compared to September 2023, registering 773,296 passengers. Domestically, traffic decreased by 3.9%, while international traffic increased by a remarkable 26.0%.

In contrast to the declines in Mexico and Puerto Rico, Colombia experienced a year-over-year growth of 14.7%, with 1.35 million passengers. International traffic in Colombia grew by 15.2%, while domestic traffic increased by 14.5%.

So far in 2024, Asur’s total passenger traffic accumulated a growth of 1.5%, reaching 53.5 million passengers. In Mexico, the accumulated annual figure showed a slight fall of 3.6%, while in Puerto Rico it increased by 8.3%. Meanwhile, Colombia reported an accumulated growth of 11.0%.

These results reflect a disparate performance in the different markets in which Asur operates, with a significant fall in key destinations such as Cancun and a solid recovery in international markets such as Colombia and Puerto Rico.
