Given the arrival of more than 570,000 national and international tourists to Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya during the upcoming Easter holidays, the municipal government headed by President Lili Campos announced that it is prepared to provide them with better services and security.

“According to hoteliers, it is expected to reach between 90 and 92 percent occupancy in Playa del Carmen and around 95 percent in the entire Riviera Maya, exceeding the historical percentages on the same dates in 2019 -before the pandemic- which was 84 percent, and from 2022 it was 85 percent,” said the head of the Secretariat of Tourism in Solidarity, Samaria Angulo.

She stated that the municipal government is very clear about the importance of national tourism in this vacation spot, which in 2022 ranked second in terms of influx of visitors, below the United States and above Canada. For this reason, various actions have been prepared for greater safety, quality of service and enjoyment of the beaches, through the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Protection, Environment, Public Safety, Public Services and ZOFEMAT.

The operations with various emergency bodies, elements of the three orders of government, cleaning workers of the tourist area and beaches, have the objective of giving support to visitors, offering quality services, safeguarding their integrity, keeping the tourist area clean without neglecting colonies and subdivisions of the city, so that the local, national and international visitor has a pleasant stay and enjoy the public beaches.

Regarding the state of the beaches, Samaria Angulo pointed out that the arrival season of sargassum is present, however, through the Secretariat for Sustainable Environment and Climate Change the removal of the algae is carried out on time. “Last March, ZOFEMAT withdrew 4,278.3 tons, in February 2,541.5 tons, and in January 715.6 tons,” she reported.

According to the State Secretariat of Tourism (SEDETUR), last January the Riviera Maya had an influx of tourists of more than 786,000, when on the same dates in 2022 it was 534,000. Only Playa del Carmen reached 165,990 visitors, surpassing the 140,314 in January 2022.
