Cancun, Quintana Roo (March 5, 2021).- The Government of Mexico gave the flag to start the works for the construction of Section 5 of the Maya Train comprehensive development project in the state of Quintana Roo, which corresponds to 121 kilometers of double via Cancun to Tulum. This route will be fully electrified and will have four stations, in addition to three stops.
Accompanying President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the general director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), Rogelio Jiménez Pons, stressed that the actions in the next three or four months will focus on preliminary work such as the design of the executive project.
“This is a project that began less than a year ago and is already beginning to distribute economic, social, cultural, and environmental benefits in the region,” Jimenez Pons said.
The construction of Section 5 North, which runs from the Cancun International Airport to Playa del Carmen Norte (60.3 kilometers of electrified double track, and mainly on elevated viaduct), will be in charge of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena).
The undersecretary of National Defense, André Georges Foullon Van Lissum, indicated: “This secretariat will work with other federal agencies and will use the resources it has to build the Maya Train. This project is one more link in a chain that benefits the development of the country ”.
Gustavo Ricardo Vallejo Suárez, the commander of the Agrupamiento de Ingenieros of the Santa Lucía Air Base and a construction site resident, pointed out:
“The construction must be carried out in an orderly and rapid manner, rebuilding the two sections of the current highway to boost commerce and tourism. After signing the collaboration agreement with Fonatur, in 24 months the construction of section 5 north of the Mayan Train will be carried out. “
The construction of the railroad of the Maya Train for Section 5 South, which corresponds to the route from Playa del Carmen to Libramiento Tulum (60.7 kilometers of double electrified track) will be in charge of Grupo México, in conjunction with the Spanish company Acciona, which also has extensive experience in railway projects around the world.
The executive vice president of Grupo México, Xavier García de Quevedo, endorsed the importance of the work, stating: “The Maya Train is one of the most relevant projects of the last decades that will transform the way of moving people and goods in the Yucatan Peninsula”.
This work seeks to guarantee the least damage during construction so that the tourism and hotel industry already affected by the current pandemic has the best conditions for gradual economic recovery and in the shortest possible time.
Subsequently, the authorities accompanied the head of the federal Executive to Uayma, Yucatán, for the supervision of work in Section 4, which will connect Cancun with Izamal and will open the doors of the north of the peninsula to tourists and inhabitants of the region.
At this point, Rogelio Jiménez Pons highlighted the commitment of Fonatur to preserve the cultural heritage of the region, announcing actions in conjunction with the INAH to renovate the church and the public square of Uayma.
The general director of ICA, Guadalupe Phillips, stated that the works are progressing in a timely manner: “Section 4 is being built without setbacks. We are collaborating with Fonatur, Environment and Anthropology in 6 road sections. We are about to open 2 sections of the highway segments and we will soon open the first railway sections. At the end of March, we will have 82 km of road and soon 32 km of a railroad”.
During the event in Quintana Roo, AMLO was also accompanied by: the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González; the Secretary of Communications and Transportation, Jorge Arganis Díaz Leal; the undersecretary of National Defense, André Georges Foullon Van Lissum; the commander of the Grouping of Engineers of the Santa Lucía Air Base attached to Sedena, Gustavo Ricardo Vallejo Suárez; the municipal president of Benito Juárez, Mara Lezama Espinosa; the executive vice president of Grupo México, Xavier García de Quevedo; Acciona’s Director of Construction for Latin America, Francisco Javier Lázaro; and the honorary supervisor of the Mayan Train, Daniel Chávez Morán.
In Yucatán, the president was accompanied by: the governor of Yucatán, Mauricio Vila Dosal; the municipal president of Uayma, Yamili Ivony Cupul Vázquez; and the CEO of ICA, Guadalupe Phillips Margáin.
