Four carriers, including two from the United States, have announced flights to the new airport, set to open next month.

  • Mexico’s new Tulum International Airport will open on December 1, 2023, and already has four carriers planning to operate flights to and from the airport, making it a promising option for leisure travel.
  • Aeromexico will have twice-daily flights from Mexico City International Airport to Tulum, while Viva Aerobus will operate flights from Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Tijuana.
  • Delta Air Lines and Spirit Airlines will become the first US airlines to offer service at Tulum International Airport.

Mexico’s new Tulum International Airport (TQO) is set to open for commercial service next month. The new airport is located in the Yucatan peninsula and will help ease the saturation levels of Cancun International (CUN), the region’s main hub and a crucial gateway for foreign travelers. Even before the airport is completed, four airlines, including two from the US, are already making plans to fly in.

The new airport

Mexico’s government under Andrés Manuel López Obrador built two international airports. The Felipe Ángeles International (NLU) located north of Mexico City was inaugurated in March 2022 with mixed success, although it has been receiving new routes, including new services to the United States in recent months.

Following NLU, the government turned its attention to the Yucatan Peninsula, and began the construction of the new Tulum International Airport. Tulum is an increasingly popular choice for leisure travelers, south of Cancun and close to many all-inclusive resorts, stunning beaches, and amazing cultural and historic sites.

Tulum International is set to be inaugurated on December 1, 2023, and the fact four carriers, including two from the States, have already thrown their hats in the ring to service the new connection shows just what a promising option this is for leisure travel. By April 2024, the airport is set to have at least 53 weekly flights.

Aeromexico

Mexico’s full-service carrier announced a few months ago it will begin flying to Tulum from day one. The company is set to have twice-daily flights to Tulum from Mexico City International Airport (MEX). This route will be operated by the company’s regional branch, Aeromexico Connect, and its Embraer E1 fleet with 99 seats per aircraft.

Viva Aerobus

This ultra-low-cost carrier announced four different routes connecting Tulum International to the country’s top domestic airports. Starting on December 1, Viva Aerobus will operate flights from Guadalajara (GDL, three weekly flights), Mexico City (MEX, daily), Monterrey (MTY, daily), and Tijuana (TIJ, one a week). The services from MEX and TIJ will be on the airline’s Airbus A321neo with 240 seats, while the other two will be onboard Viva’s A320neo with a capacity of 184 passengers.

Delta Air Lines

Aeromexico’s top partner isn’t losing time flying to Tulum International. It was the first US-based company to announce new flights to this destination. Beginning on March 28, Delta Air Lines will launch a new route from Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport (ATL) to Tulum, with daily flights. The company will employ its Boeing 737-800 aircraft fleet, with a capacity for 160 passengers, on this route.

“We know Tulum-bound customers will enjoy the elevated experience Delta consistently offers — and now without a two-hour drive from Cancun — as we grow our footprint in Mexico and throughout the Yucatan region,” said Delta’s senior vice president of Network Planning, Joe Esposito, in a statement.

Spirit Airlines

A week ago, the ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines announced new, nonstop service to Tulum, becoming the first US-based ULCC to announce service at the brand-new airport.

Spirit Airlines will launch daily flights from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Orlando (MCO), starting on March 28, 2024, in conjuction with the start of TQO’s international service. John Kirby, vice president of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines said the company has a long history of serving Mexico, “and Tulum’s new airport is a great addition that will make it easier for our guests to get to the city and enjoy its beaches, history, and variety of unique experiences.”
