There is a lack of coordination in the fight against sargassum in the Riviera Maya

The Mexican Association of Women Entrepreneurs (Amexme) believes there is a lack of genuine coordination among the three levels of government to address the sargassum problem in the Riviera Maya.

Interviewed in Playa del Carmen, Valeria Rinderstma, president of this association in the Riviera Maya, stated that the strategy implemented so far has demonstrated a lack of collaborative work.

She believes the problem of sargassum influx, which affects the region every year, must be taken more seriously because it has significantly impacted the destination.

“So, in my opinion, where we are failing is in the lack of complete coordination among the three levels of government,” she emphasized.

The party stated that the massive influx of sargassum in recent days in Playa del Carmen is leaving visitors “disheartened,” and that authorities must take immediate action to prevent a potential drop in tourism.

They emphasized that the business sector “will not let up” until authorities develop an effective strategy against the macroalgae.

They recalled that the Fisheries Charter was amended last year to classify sargassum as a resource to be utilized, but regulations for its implementation are still lacking.

They highlighted that currently, there is only one sargassum-collecting vessel from the Navy, which is insufficient to meet the demand, and there is inadequate port infrastructure for docking ships.

Finally, the businesswoman mentioned that the business sector has consistently expressed its willingness to collaborate, but insisted on government coordination to prevent the algae from washing ashore.
