The president of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, affirmed that despite the criticism about the environmental impact of the Maya Train, the works will continue and the North Section 5 will be inaugurated on February 29.
During his morning conference, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that his government “is acting responsibly” for the construction of infrastructure such as the “Felipe Ángeles” International Airport (AIFA) and the Maya Train, in response to the criticisms for the environmental damage caused by these works.
The Executive responded in this way to the activists and environmental groups, and highlighted that in previous administrations there was no intervention of these to question the governments.
“Before, neither Green Peace, nor the UN, nor the OAS, nothing, nothing, they did what they wanted, destroying paradise. Suddenly, we want to build the Maya Train, taking care of nature, planting trees like never before; well, that section from Cancun to Tulum, is 120 kilometers, and of the 20 kilometers are like 80, if not more, like 90 of viaduct to not affect either underground rivers, or cenotes and to give free passage to the fauna”, he established.
Regarding the definitive suspension that weighs on the construction of Section 5 South of the Maya Train, by a District Court, which requests the federal government to deliver environmental statements, mainly related to cenotes and bodies of water affected by the installation of iron supports, the president affirmed that they have them.
“Of course, the studies were done to put the piles where they had to be put. More funds are being allocated, like two or three times more, than what was not done before; however, pseudo-environmentalists appeared like mushrooms after the rain, and (they are) very corrupt”.
He assured that they will deliver the information requested by the District Judge and that the work of the Maya Train “will not stop”, despite the judicial suspension to stop the construction in that site. He added that if they stop the works in one section, they will continue in others.
It may be that they tell us that we cannot work here, but we have many sections to continue working and we are going to inaugurate, the section from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, on February 29, in the morning.
Despite the public statements of organizations and civil society, the president affirmed that they are working responsibly and without “destroying anything”.
President López Obrador added that the cancellation of the Texcoco Airport and the construction of the Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Santa Lucía, have received criticism, despite the fact that the environmental issues were taken care of.
He considered that in the Texcoco airport, in addition to the environmental impact, there were influence peddlers in the towns and environmental studies were carried out “to measure” to allow the construction, although he made the decision to stop the work.
“They had as a business (…) buying part of the land around the lake, influence peddlers in the towns of Atenco, all the ejidos, they agreed with the famous international aeronautical agencies, and I do not have elements that is why I cannot say it, but they did some studies to measure, why? because they decided that it could be built in the Texcoco lake but there were no environmentalists there”, he indicated.
