The power outage led to everything from traffic light failures throughout the city to over an hour of disruption in mobile phone and internet services.
According to a brief statement from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), at 4:13 PM, there was an interruption in the power supply in the Cancún and Riviera Maya area due to an event on the 230KV transmission line from Valladolid to Nizuc, affecting 277,000 users.
The supply has now been restored to normal. Earlier, on June 21, during the intense heat season, a series of blackouts occurred in the Yucatán Peninsula. The National Energy Control Center (Cenace) reported that the National Interconnected System was in an Alert Operational State, with a reserve margin of less than 6 percent due to high energy demand for air conditioning in homes, businesses, and other urban infrastructure.
In response to these blackouts, Sergio León, president of the Entrepreneurs Association for Quintana Roo, estimated losses of 500 million pesos in Cancún due to equipment breakdowns and business disruptions.
