The Mundo Maya Tulum Hotel, opened less than a year ago and managed by the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), is affected by a borer beetle infestation that is already compromising its structure.

According to information published by El Universal, this situation represents a risk of collapse, endangering both guests and public property.

Tender IA-07-H0C-007H0C999-N-109-2025, published on the Compras MX platform, indicates that the borer beetle is active in ceilings, beams, furniture, and other wooden structures. Technical inspections warned that:

The damage is progressing rapidly.
It is difficult to detect with the naked eye.
The stability of the property is already compromised.

Recent technical inspections detected an active infestation in wooden structures, including ceilings, beams, and furniture, which compromises the stability of the property.

What actions are being considered?

Official documentation establishes that immediate intervention by specialized pest control personnel is required to contain and eradicate the wood-boring beetle.

The objective is to ensure the safe operation of the hotel and prevent risks to users.

Fumigation must meet the following conditions:

It must be carried out by a certified biologist or natural resource manager, accompanied by two pest control technicians.
The proposed personnel must be the same as those who will ultimately perform the service.
The pesticides applied must be listed in the Cofepris Pesticide Catalog and registered with Cicoplafest, with no expiration date expired.
Furthermore, it is ordered that the data obtained—including photographic files—be for the exclusive use of the hotel. To this end, bidders must sign a confidentiality agreement.

Companies Interested parties and service costs

Four companies are seeking the contract:

Grupo Argent: 5.9 million pesos.
KTR Inv: 4.26 million pesos.
Scent Jittal: 4.49 million pesos.
E-Templum: 3.3 million pesos.
The tender decision will be announced on August 19 through the Compras MX platform.

Guest Safety During Fumigation

The tender establishes that, prior to any work, those responsible must inform the property managers about the process, the risks involved, and the necessary preventive measures.

This is intended to prevent poisoning or incidents during the application of pesticides on hotel premises.

This experience must be accredited with a training certificate or equivalent, endorsed by a certified training agent, which must be attached to the proposal.

What is the borer beetle?

The wood-boring beetle is an insect that feeds on wood. It belongs to a group of beetles known as borers because they tunnel into the wood when laying their eggs or feeding.

Main characteristics

Size: They are usually small, ranging from a few millimeters to just over a centimeter.
Habitat: They attack dry or damp wood, in beams, ceilings, furniture, and other structures.
Life cycle: Females lay eggs in cracks in the wood; when they hatch, the larvae excavate internal galleries that weaken the structure.
Damage: Not visible at first, as it occurs inside the wood. Over time, small holes and fine dust (sawdust) appear, signs that the pest is active.

Risks

Structural: By boring into beams, ceilings, and furniture, they reduce the strength of the wood.
Rapid progression: Deterioration spreads silently and can quickly compromise entire buildings.
In places like Tulum, with warm and humid climates, this type of beetle finds ideal breeding conditions, which explains why the Hotel Mundo Maya is already facing this infestation.
