Snowfall in the United States has already caused the cancellation of 58 flights, as well as 47 delays to and from Cancún on Saturday, January 24, and Sunday, January 25, according to a report from Aeropuertos del Sureste (Southeast Airports).
On Saturday, 20 arriving and 20 departing flights were affected: 14 United Airlines flights; 10 Southwest Airlines flights; 6 Delta Airlines flights; as well as two Air Canada flights, two Frontier Airlines flights, two Porter Airlines flights, two Sun Country Airlines flights, and two WestJet Airlines flights.
That same day, seven arriving flights were canceled: three Spirit Airlines flights and four American Airlines flights. There were also twelve departing flights canceled: one Aeroméxico flight; three Spirit Airlines flights; and eight American Airlines flights, for a total of 19.
On Sunday, there were 39 cancellations, with each airline affecting one arriving flight. JetBlue and Southwest each had two flights canceled, while American Airlines reported eight canceled landings, for a total of 17 arrivals.
On outbound flights, cancellations affected Delta, Frontier, Spirit, Southwest, and WestJet with one flight each; United Airlines canceled two flights; JetBlue canceled seven; and American Airlines canceled eight, for a total of 22.
There were seven delays in total: five on outbound flights by American Airlines, one each by Delta and Viva Aerobus, and two by JetBlue.
The arrival delays included one American Airlines flight and one Delta flight.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns that 34 states are already being affected by Winter Storm Fern. The storm, which will also be felt in Mexico and Canada, could affect 250 million people across the three countries.
NOAA has warned that this winter storm could cause “catastrophic” ice accumulation in the southern United States.
On Saturday alone, approximately 12,000 flights were canceled across the United States due to the monstrous winter storm that began wreaking havoc across much of the country, threatening to cut power for days and cover major highways in ice.
