In the last week, at least 50 of the 100 tourist beaches in northern Quintana Roo were invaded by excessive levels of sargassum, according to the Kinich Ka’an Ojo del Cielo Sargassum Monitoring Network.
According to the environmental organization’s monitoring map and traffic light, 50 beaches have excessive levels of sargassum; another 9 have abundant levels; 17 have moderate levels; 19 have low levels; and only 5 are free of the macroalgae that is emerging from the depths onto the coast due to factors such as climate change, increased nutrients in the water, and ocean currents.
The monitoring published on June 8 reports that the five sargassum-free beaches are Chiquilá, Holbox Ferry, Punta Mosquito, Cabo Catoche, and Isla Contoy.
The beaches with low levels of sargassum are Punta Sur, El Cielo, Palancar Beach, Playa Mia, Playa San Francisco, Chankanaab Beach, Playa Las Uvas, Playa Tortugas, Playa Langosta, Playa Caracol, Playa Las Perlas, Isla Mujeres, Punta Sur, Centro, and Norte, Playa Mia, Playa Lancheros, Holbox Center, and Punta Cocos.
The beaches with moderate levels are Cozumel Muelle, Playa San Juan, Playa Las Rocas, Playa Punta Norte, Isla de la Pasión, Playa Mamitas, Puerto Morelos Center, Punta Nizuc, Playa San Miguel, Puerto Cancún, Puerta del Mar, Puerto Juárez, Playa del Niño, El Palmar, Punta Sam, Playa Mujeres, Costa Mujeres, and Isla Blanca.
Shangri-La, Punta Maroma, Playa Paraíso, Playa Delfines, Playa Ballenas, Playa Marlín, Playa Chac-Mool, Playa Gaviota Azul, and Punta Cancún all have abundant levels of sargassum.
Punta Celarain, El Mirador Beach, Encantada Beach, Bonita Beach, San Martin Beach, Mirador San Martin, Chen Rio Beach, Chumul Beach, Mezcalitos Beach, El Castillo Beach, Xhanan Beach, Punta Molas, Arco Maya, Tulum ZH South and North, Punta Piedra, Tulum ZH Ruins, Tankah, Soliman Bay, Xcacel-Xcacelito, Principe Bay, Akumal, Akumal Media Luna, Kantenah, and Xpu-Ha are all experiencing excessive levels.
Also, Barceló Maya, Puerto Aventuras, Paamul, Playacar ZH Phases 1 and 2, Playacar Ferry, Playa Caribe, El Recodo Beach, Constituyentes Beach, Colosio Beach, Esmeralda Beach, Xcalacoco, Punta Bete, Vidanta, Valentin, Playa del Secreto, El Dorado Beach, Punta Brava, Puerto Morelos North, Punta Caracol, Petempich Bay, Royalton Riviera, Moon Palace, Riviera Cancun, and Cancun Playa Coral.
