A Brazilian woman has been arrested for her alleged involvement in a human trafficking ring that forced women into prostitution in Playa del Carmen.
Débora N., originally from Brazil, was identified by the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) as an accomplice to Argentine Matías Gustavo N., who is facing charges related to the crime. Débora allegedly recruited women through a social networking site, promising them work as escorts in Playa del Carmen.
However, once the victims were brought to a house in the Residencial Allegranza neighborhood, they were forced to offer sexual services for between 1,500 and 2,500 pesos per encounter. Débora and her partner kept 30 percent of the payment from each service.
The women were also subjected to a range of other expenses, including paying 10,000 pesos per month for rent, 4,000 pesos for electricity, and 2,000 pesos for water. They were also forced to pay 200 pesos per day for food and incur fines of 1,000 pesos if they turned on the air conditioning.
In addition to prostitution, the women were also coerced into selling drugs to their clients. Those who refused faced threats of kidnapping.
Quintana Roo authorities executed a search warrant at the Residencial Allegranza house, rescuing two women in the process. An investigation led them to Débora N., who was in Mexico City and subsequently arrested by local authorities.
Débora has been taken into custody and admitted to a social rehabilitation center, where she will face prosecution for human trafficking in the form of prostitution of others. The identities of her victims have been withheld due to concerns for their safety.
