In this tourist season of Easter and Easter, San Miguel de Allende registers a hotel occupancy of 1 to 2 percent, since only 30 of the 135 hotels are open, offering their service only to health personnel or by some emergency.
This was stated by Jorge Olalde Chávez, president of the San Miguel de Allende Hotel Association, in the context of the COVID-19 health contingency, which has forced a quarantine that has forced them to suspend operations.
San Miguel de Allende is in total silence but said it is because the sanitary measures are being complied with. Something atypical without a doubt in the municipality.
He recalled that yesterday two viewpoints were closed, the historic center and access to the Allende dam were cordoned off.
“It is a different Easter, there is absolute silence. The shops are closed from the Crafts Market, spas, public squares and it is sold in restaurants in spaces for a limited number of people, but mostly to take away, “he said.
Olalde Chávez said that San Miguel Allende has 135 hotels that have from four rooms to the largest with 210, but the standard is that these establishments have an average of 20 to 22 rooms, they are relatively small due to the service and the tourist sector. .
“Occupancy is at most 1 to 2 percent of hotels that still remain open. We do not have guests in San Miguel de Allende, of the rest that are 30 active hotels, that is, with two to five rooms for people who for urgent needs come and have to work on health issues or who for some need need to sleep in the municipality, but they are not for tourists ”, he emphasized.
The president of the Hotel Association reported that there is an atypical situation in terms of health, they have to be applied and they adjust to the restrictions of the government orders to get around the situation.
“We are in a different situation from last year. Easter, from Dolores Friday, began to fill with tourists and visitors that we had the privilege of receiving with the wide range of accommodation and services, “he said.
He added that the chain that supplies all these people this season in San Miguel, had the highest week in terms of hotel occupancy and economic spillover, he recalled.
