RECURRING CONFLICT AT THE AIRPORT: Transport workers protest against digital platform service in Cancun

Tour operators and service providers held a protest this morning against platforms such as Uber, DiDi, and InDrive, denouncing the fact that more than 100 of these vehicles enter Cancún International Airport daily, which has reduced their activity at the terminal by more than 50 percent.

The protesters began their protest in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) and later, in a caravan, advanced toward the airport, traveling at low speed on Tulum Avenue.

The caravan of these transporters caused heavy traffic on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard for approximately an hour; during this time, the Traffic Department implemented a road operation to prevent further disruptions in the area.

During the demonstration, the protesters asserted that the arrival of this type of service to the state has caused their economic losses to amount to 70 percent per unit.

They emphasized that the situation has worsened in recent months, as they are unable to compete on equal terms with the operators of these platforms.

In this regard, the protesters demanded greater control over access to the airport; they also requested that platform drivers be subject to the same operating guidelines and taxes as licensed transporters.

The protesters warned that if they do not receive a prompt response from authorities at all three levels of government, they will hold further demonstrations in the city until all their issues are heard and addressed.
