Two Israeli nationals were arrested by security personnel after allegedly refusing to pay for a taxi and damaging the vehicle in the city center.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred when the men hailed a Chevrolet Spark taxi, number 1218, near the “No Name” bar, requesting a ride to the “El Fogón” restaurant.
Upon arriving at their destination, the passengers—allegedly intoxicated—refused to pay the fare, leading to an argument with the driver.
Witnesses stated that the situation quickly escalated, as the men became aggressive, making threats and subsequently damaging the vehicle by breaking the rear windshield.
After the incident, the men fled toward the area of the municipal building; however, the driver requested assistance from the authorities, prompting a search operation. Minutes later, both were located at the intersection of 20th Avenue and 10th Street, where they were apprehended by police officers.
The detainees were turned over to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), which will determine their legal status, while the damaged vehicle was towed to a tow yard for evaluation.
In February, the Cancún taxi drivers’ union continued the process of purging and modernizing its fleet, which included the complete removal of Tsuru vehicles from service within two years, according to its general secretary, Rubén Carrillo. The union leader explained at the time that the measure was in response to both official regulations and the union’s commitment to the safety of passengers and drivers.
