Playa del Carmen Struggles with Persistent Homophobia and Discrimination

Despite its reputation as a welcoming tourist destination, Playa del Carmen continues to grapple with a disturbing trend: homophobia and discrimination against the LGBTI+ community.

According to Juan Zavala, director of the Diverse Organizational Committee of the Diversity March, cases of aggression and phobia are on the rise in the city. Zavala attributes much of this problem to the influence of alcohol, which often fuels discriminatory behavior.

“We’re seeing a significant increase in these types of incidents,” Zavala warned, adding that his organization is currently working with several victims to provide them with legal advice and support before the Human Rights Commission.

Contrary to Playa del Carmen’s image as an inclusive city, Zavala noted that acts of homophobia and discrimination are not limited to the popular Fifth Avenue tourist zone. “These incidents occur in various neighborhoods throughout the municipality,” he said, highlighting the need for greater awareness and action.

Under the current administration, five new cases have been documented, in addition to 12 files opened since the previous administration that are still being investigated. Zavala lamented that in many cases, victims are forced to leave the city after suffering these attacks, making it difficult to progress with investigations and close the cases.

This persistent problem raises questions about Playa del Carmen’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity. As the city continues to grow and attract tourists from around the world, it is imperative that authorities take concrete steps to address this issue and create a safer, more welcoming environment for all residents and visitors.
