Playa del Carmen Steps Up Fight Against Dengue and Malaria

Two cases of dengue fever and one case of malaria have been confirmed in Playa del Carmen during April, according to local Health Secretary Juan Antonio Uribe Trujillo.

While some may focus on fogging as a solution, the official emphasizes that prevention is key. “It’s not about fumigating based on perception, but rather based on well-established epidemiological criteria,” Uribe Trujillo stresses.

In Puerto Aventuras, health authorities have received requests to intervene due to a high concentration of mosquitoes in areas surrounding the wastewater treatment plant. However, the Health Secretary is clear that this issue requires a joint effort from citizens and authorities alike.

“Families must take responsibility for eliminating mosquito breeding sites in their yards, rooftops, and any area where water accumulates,” Uribe Trujillo warns. “A tire filled with water can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and we urge everyone to be vigilant.”

The official’s message highlights the importance of community involvement in preventing the spread of dengue and malaria. By working together, authorities and citizens can reduce the risk of these diseases and maintain a safe environment for residents and tourists alike.
