In a bid to modernize its traditional tourism model, the city of Playa del Carmen has joined forces with Spanish business leaders specializing in smart travel and sustainability. The move is part of a broader effort to create a more humane, inclusive, and environmentally-friendly destination.

The partnership was forged during a working meeting held by the municipal government of Playa del Carmen, led by President Estefanía Mercado, with a delegation of Spanish business leaders representing leading tourism technology companies such as Sismotur, Inmark, OkLocated, Libelium, Urban, and Delta Tecnologías.

The meeting was part of the Spain-Mexico Smart Tourism Conference, which aims to share successful experiences and open opportunities for collaboration between the two countries. The conference is a follow-up to agreements reached during the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) held in Madrid last January.

During the session, key points were exchanged on the challenges facing tourist destinations in the digital age, as well as the opportunities offered by technological innovation for more efficient, transparent, and participatory management.

Municipal Tourism Secretary Estefanía Hernández emphasized that Playa del Carmen is committed to a profound transformation of the tourism model, moving from All Inclusive to All Inclusive, integrating local communities into the value chain, and promoting the destination with cultural routes, ocean and jungle viewpoints, and a unique identity based on history, urban planning, and sustainability.

“Harnessing technology and innovation will enable us to create a more sustainable and inclusive tourism model that benefits everyone,” she said. “Tourism should be a solution, not the problem.”

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue strengthening strategic alliances that will position Playa del Carmen as an international benchmark for sustainable and inclusive tourism.
