Kore Hotel Strikers Await Labor Resolution in Tulum

Strikers at the Hotel Kore in Tulum—who formally declared a labor dispute last Saturday—are awaiting a proposal from the company that has left them in limbo since October of last year.

Uri Carmona Islas, Commissioner for the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC) in the Riviera Maya, stated that they hope to reach an agreement before labor authorities from Quintana Roo’s Judiciary are compelled to intervene more forcefully.

“The declaration of the strike serves to fulfill regulatory requirements; right now, we are waiting for a document to be issued by the labor authority to make the action legally effective—a process that shouldn’t take long. I believe we must remain vigilant in our dealings with the company in order to reach a resolution. Currently, the workers are in possession of the premises, ensuring they maintain their standing and that a fair agreement can be reached,” Carmona Islas reported.

Workers at this hotel establishment are owed back wages, year-end bonuses, and other benefits stipulated in their collective bargaining agreement. Violations of these terms were first observed during the first half of last year.

In response, the National Union of Workers in the Food, Beverage, Tourism, Hotel, Gastronomy, and Allied Industries—a union affiliated with CROC—initiated strike proceedings in 2025 before the Labor Tribunal of Playa del Carmen.

The union filed a lawsuit against the company managing the hotel, Inmobiliaria Turística del Carmen—an entity also linked to the management of the Hotel Parnassus in Cancún, where workers similarly declared a strike in 2025.

“Operations ceased back in October. The workforce originally consisted of 60 employees, leaving a core group of around 18 workers; it was this group that declared the strike with the support of CROC. Our colleague, Martín de la Cruz, has been following up with the labor authority to ensure the strike declaration is formally recognized as legally valid,” added Uri Carmona.

For the time being, the entire situation hinges on the negotiations between the union representatives and the company. Should this lack of engagement persist, the work stoppage could drag on pending the seizure and auction of the property to satisfy the workers’ financial demands—a process that takes several years.
