Can you imagine a trip from Cancún to Tulum aboard the Maya Train? Section 5 is about to be completed, and this is what this adventure through southeastern Mexico would be like.
Pack your bags! Section 5 of the Maya Train is about to be completed and will offer a unique travel experience from Cancún Airport to the new Tulum Airport “Felipe Carrillo Puerto.”
Section 5 of the Maya Train is divided into two parts: north and south. The northern section extends from Cancún Airport to Puerto Morelos, while the southern section covers the route to the new Tulum Airport “Felipe Carrillo Puerto.”
This new route will have four main stations: Cancún Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Each of these stations is equipped to provide high-quality service and is connected to various points of interest in the region.
Óscar David Lozano Águila, general director of Tren Maya S.A. de C.V., highlighted that the first three stations are already operational, and the entire section is expected to be operational by September.
The 111-kilometer journey will be carried out on a double electrified track, improving the efficiency and sustainability of rail transport.
Section 5 also offers access to a variety of attractions. From Cancún, travelers can explore the El Meco archaeological site, the Tajamar boardwalk, the Arrecife National Park, and the “Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín” Botanical Garden.
Playa del Carmen offers the famous Fifth Avenue and the Fundadores Park. From the Tulum station, visitors can access the Tulum and Cobá archaeological sites, as well as enjoy the Jaguar National Park.
The Maya Train currently offers six daily commercial services, with specific schedules for trips between Mérida, Teya, Playa del Carmen, and Cancún. These schedules are:
- Mérida-Teya to Playa del Carmen at 07:00 hours.
- Playa del Carmen to Mérida-Teya at 17:30 hours.

Ticket prices vary depending on the selected route and can be consulted on the official Maya Train website. Currently, the system does not allow the option to create round trips, so passengers must purchase two tickets for a round trip.
The Maya Train stands out for its exterior design inspired by Mayan culture. The carriages reflect the colors and textures of regional art and the majesty of the jaguar, an emblematic symbol of the southeast.
The trains, manufactured in Mexico, are equipped with cutting-edge technology that allows speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, ensuring a fast and safe journey.
