President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that he was “deceived” because they made him believe that they were no longer extracting material, however, now that he flew over the area, he realized that they continue to operate.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported that he instructed to proceed legally against the American mining company Calizas Industriales del Carmen (Calica) for “mocking” the Mexican authorities, as he accused that they continue to extract material in Quintana Roo.

“I have instructed the secretary to proceed immediately, it is going to proceed legally because there is a violation of the laws and it is a tremendous destruction of the environment and it is daring to make fun of the authorities of our country,” he reported this Monday at his conference of the press.

The president explained that he noticed this “mockery” after he flew over the area over the weekend and saw how the activities in the area continued.

“I was just there for the weekend and they had deceived me that they were no longer extracting material and I passed by there, I flew over it, always like three times and in effect, everything was stopped. The cranes stopped, everything stopped, but now I got through, maybe they didn’t know or it was because we went by on Friday and I flew over and I realized that they are working with everything, extracting material, I saw how they are loading a ship”, he recounted.

The president shared that he did not believe when he was informed that the company was keeping the extraction “hidden”, however, when it is verified, it will proceed legally.

The Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, informed in recent days that an agreement had been reached with the Calica company: they were offered to change the land use of the land from which they extracted materials and turn them into a natural park.

“Yesterday, we met with the Vulcan representative and he has already accepted the proposal, he is going to make a natural park. Semarnat will go in next week to do a survey and determine the density. It was agreed that the material that had been extracted will be able to be removed, exported,” the secretary reported.

The president said Monday that he was confident that while Calica was granted the permit, they would respect the agreement, but that was not the case.

“I thought that while we were talking about the permit being given for ecological tourism development, they were going to stop. We were flying over and there was nothing because they knew when we were going to go, ”she mentioned.

Xcaret against the Mayan Train

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considered that behind the demonstrations against section five of the Mayan Train is the Xcaret company, as well as pseudo-environmentalists.

“We are not going to allow a work that benefits the entire southeast to be stopped, nothing more for the protection of the interests of economic groups that rent to pseudo-environmentalists, communicators, columnists and the media,” he said.

Regarding the closure of the new Xcaret park, Xibalbá, the Secretary of the Environment, Luisa María Albores, reported that it is a company that usually asks for forgiveness and not permission.

“It has never presented an environmental impact statement in all its proposals and all its projects and that is a reality, because we are within the Ministry of the Environment,” she said.
