The fourth edition of the “Fallen Men of the Sea” sport fishing tournament will be held in Cozumel on October 27.
This event aims to pay tribute to deceased sailors, according to William Güemez Vidal, president of the Cooperative of Tourist, Aquatic, and Underwater Workers of Cozumel.
Additionally, the tournament’s cause will benefit 12 people from the community.
A Responsible and Traditional Fishing Tournament
One of the main features of this edition is that the capture of beaked marine species, such as marlin or sailfish, will not be allowed, in an effort to promote responsible fishing.
Instead, species like wahoo, dorado, and sierra will be prioritized, evaluated by weight and size, fostering a fair and sustainable competition.
Additionally, as part of local traditions, the tournament will offer fried fish to share with attendees, continuing a practice the cooperative has revived in gratitude to the fishing community.
This gesture is made possible by the donation of at least one piece of the catch from each boat, with 120 kilograms of fish already committed for the event.
Growth and Promotion
Last year, 32 boats participated, and for this edition, the organizers expect greater participation thanks to the extended invitation to other parts of the Yucatán Peninsula.
William Güemez Vidal also highlighted that they will seek the support of municipal authorities to promote the tournament nationally and internationally, which would strengthen Cozumel’s tourist appeal.
Female Inclusion in Fishing
Although there has been no female participation in the tournament to date, Güemez Vidal expressed his hope that this will change this year, emphasizing the importance of inclusion in such events.
He noted that many women in the region are also active participants in fishing and maritime activities.
Registration and Prizes for the Fishing Tournament
Registrations for the fishing tournament will be open until the day of the event, before the starting signal.
The participation fee is 3,500 pesos and includes the official tournament t-shirt, as well as beverages like water and soft drinks.
Although the prizes are yet to be defined, the goal is to reward winners up to the sixth place, offering attractive recognitions for the top three positions.
