Small hotels in Playa del Carmen fell short of their 90% occupancy target during the recent holiday period, reaching only slightly above 80%, reported Offner Arjona, president of the hotel association.
The hotel representative noted that while the figure is positive, it represents a decrease compared to projections, especially during one of the most important seasons of the year.
He indicated that, during this period, the majority of guests were domestic tourists, which allowed these establishments to maintain acceptable occupancy levels.
For the remainder of April, he said that expectations remain stable thanks to confirmed reservations; however, he warned that May and June are shaping up to be challenging.
He explained that they estimate an occupancy rate of between 40% and 45% for May, while for June they have only reached 20% in reservations so far. Given this outlook, hoteliers are hoping for a recovery in the coming weeks through new reservations that will allow them to improve their occupancy levels.
In March, despite occupancy levels being above 85% in Playa del Carmen, hoteliers are suffering from low rates, which is affecting their profitability; this was pointed out at the time by Arjona, president of the Association of Small Hotels of Playa del Carmen.
