Environmental Concerns Over “Peninsula Cancun” Project

76

The “Peninsula Cancun” project, intended for construction on the Pok Ta Pok golf courses, has raised significant environmental concerns due to potential overexploitation of resources in the area.

Opposition from Cancun Hotel Association

The hotel and real estate construction project, known as Peninsula Cancun, continues to be a contentious issue in southern Mexico. The Cancun Hotel Association has once again expressed its opposition to the creation of this residential complex in Quintana Roo. In discussions with Carlos Mota of adn40, Jesus Almaguer Salazar, president of the Cancun Hotel Association, highlighted the negative impact this project could have on the “most important tourist area in Latin America,” referring to this region of Quintana Roo.

Almaguer Salazar pointed out that the Peninsula Cancun project would create a high demand for basic services, potentially leading to severe negative environmental impacts in the hotel zone.

Potential Environmental Impact

According to local and national media, the Peninsula Cancun project would first result in the ecocide of the Pok Ta Pok golf course, located at kilometer 7 of Kukulcán Boulevard. Additionally, the Cancun Hotel Association noted that the saturation of hotel rooms and condominiums in the area could lead to problems with water and drainage services, as well as contamination of the Nichupté Lagoon System.

Project Details

The Peninsula Cancun project involves an investment of over 24 billion pesos, which includes the construction of:

– 2,000 residences

– A hotel

– A tower

– A shopping center

Members of the Cancun Hotel Association and residents near the Pok Ta Pok golf course have opposed the creation of this residential complex.

The Cancun Hotel Association has stated that if the National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) approves the Peninsula project, they are “prepared to go against it.”
