In the heart of Playa del Carmen’s tourist zone, two criminals apparently shot at the facade of a Colombian restaurant. No injuries or arrests have been reported; however, this crime has instilled fear in visitors and foreigners living in the city.
The incident occurred at the corner of 10th Avenue and 10th Street, where a restaurant next to a pizzeria was targeted in the attack, which took place in the presence of tourists.
After the attack was reported, neighbors called 911 for assistance. Minutes later, a large contingent of officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) responded, with the Tourist Police being the first to arrive at the scene.
According to preliminary reports, no injuries were reported. By the time officers arrived, the gunmen had fled in a vehicle, heading in an unknown direction.
Minutes later, another shooting was reported on Constituyentes Avenue, prompting officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security to mobilize and investigate.
Witnesses lamented that violent acts were occurring in the heart of the city’s tourist center, something utterly reprehensible. Promoting Playa del Carmen is pointless if there is no security for tourists or the local population.
The area was cordoned off by authorities while they awaited the arrival of agents from the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office to conduct forensic examinations of the criminal attack.
Members of the Mexican Army were also present at the scene to assist the municipal police with the search operations for the criminals who attacked the restaurant. So far, no arrests have been made.
