Cancún: Uber Denounces Abuses by National Guard at the Airport

The spokesperson for Uber drivers in Cancún, Águeda Esperilla, denounced that the persecution against drivers of this application persists at Cancún Airport.

This time, she pointed out that the National Guard (GN) is carrying out detentions and has sent at least four vehicles to the impound lot (corralón) after being reported by alleged pirate taxi drivers as Uber driver partners.

She commented that the detentions were made at the airport’s road distributor descent and not in the boarding and disembarking area of the terminal. “I have been notified that the operation continued and tourists with uncertain faces; they leave passengers stranded, and that is wrong because they requested the service, and there you see the authority’s misconduct,” said Esperilla.

She added that it could be an act of corruption, as it is the same pirate taxi drivers who send photos of Uber vehicles to GN police, and that is how they are detained. She affirmed that the GN at the airport can only take cars to the impound lot for being improperly parked. “It is not their responsibility to detain Uber cars, nor to take them to the impound lot or fine them, no matter how much they want to justify it,” assured the representative of the digital platform in Cancún.

As reported by REPORTUR.mx, the hotel sector of Quintana Roo has once again issued a strong warning about the negative impact that roadblocks organized by taxi drivers and recent customs practices at Cancún International Airport are having. David Ortiz, president of the Tulum Hotel Association, noted at the time that these actions have already caused the cancellation of several tourist groups and are damaging the destination’s image.
