Cancun: Two tourist police officers dismissed for inappropriate conduct

Two officers from the Cancún Tourist Police were dismissed after a review of their body camera footage revealed alleged misconduct during an intervention.

In a statement, Jaime Padilla, the municipal secretary of Citizen Security and Transit for Benito Juárez, reported that the incidents were discovered through a random audit of the devices worn by the officers.

The official stated that upon reviewing the video footage, he immediately ordered an investigation by the Internal Affairs Directorate. Furthermore, both officers were permanently dismissed from the force due to a loss of public trust.

Padilla affirmed that there will be no place within the municipal police force for corruption, abuse of power, or actions that undermine public trust. “Anyone who wears this uniform must act with legality, honesty, professionalism, and a dedication to service. Anyone who deviates from these principles simply has no place in this department,” he stated.

The head of Public Safety stated that they will continue to strengthen internal oversight and control mechanisms to detect any irregularities and ensure that officers fulfill their duties.

Finally, he reiterated that the department will maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward any conduct that undermines the trust of Cancún residents and visitors.

In Quintana Roo, the implementation of body cameras for police officers has already reached 50% of state and municipal officers, as part of a key strategy for surveillance, internal control, and accountability.
