The Mexican city of Cancún has strengthened its promotion of sports tourism, positioning itself as a leading destination in the field. According to Miguel Montes de Oca, Director of International Tourism Promotion for the Municipal Tourism Secretariat in the Benito Juárez City Hall, the hosting of high-level sporting events has been instrumental in this effort.
Recent events such as the Soca Cup and the third edition of the Tour de France Cancún Stage have showcased the city’s capabilities as a global sports hub. These events not only attract international athletes but also generate significant economic benefits for the hotel, restaurant, and tourism services sectors. Furthermore, they promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen the local social fabric.
“Every international sporting event projects us as a competitive and safe destination,” said Montes de Oca. “This has a direct impact on our global tourism reputation.” As Cancún prepares to host international tourists in anticipation of the 2026 World Cup, the city is working closely with the three levels of government and under the leadership of the state and federal tourism secretariats.
Tourist routes and packages are being designed that link the soccer experience with the attractions of the Mexican Caribbean. The aim is for visitors who come to Cancún for the World Cup to stay and discover more of what Mexico has to offer, as well as encouraging those who primarily come to enjoy the sea and culture to attend a World Cup match.
Cancún’s plan to strengthen connectivity and infrastructure also includes new promotional partnerships with Canadian and American World Cup venues. The city is confident that it can continue to shine not only for its beaches but also for its ability to blend sports, culture, entertainment, and global reach.
