Cancun is the city where more hotel rooms are built

During 2022 in Mexico, more than 39 hotels, 3-5 stars, were opened, of which 22 are located in Cancun and Riviera Maya, giving a total of 6,923 new rooms.

According to the CBRE “Hotel and Tourism Market” report, in the city of Quintana Roo there are an estimated 4,233 open rooms, followed by Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen with 1,549 and 1,141 rooms respectively.

The new rooms represent 76% of the new offer, while, in 2019, Quintana Roo with 7,412 open rooms represented 44% of the national total.

Likewise, the company has said that more than 7,150 rooms are under construction in the country, in the 3 to 5-star category:

Cancun: 1,600 rooms

Mexico City: 1,500 rooms

Riviera Maya: 900 rooms

Is Cancun the most visited destination by tourists?

Although it is true that Cancun is where the most hotel rooms are built, according to DataTur, La Paz is the beach destination with the greatest recovery of its activity prior to the pandemic, registering 63.7%, with 16.5 percentage points above of 2021 and 13.5 above 2019.

Likewise, it is important to highlight that of the 70 destinations monitored by the agency, the highest occupancy is in beach centers with 65.7%, this means 16.9 percentage points above the occupancy of 2021 (48.9%) and -0.1 percentage points against the 2019 (65.8%).

And that the main cities of Mexico: Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara, registered 53.1% occupancy, recovering 17.0 percentage points in relation to the previous year (36.1%) and -9.5 percentage points below what was registered in 2019 ( 62.7%).

For its part, the Ministry of Tourism has indicated that for the May 2023 long weekends, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Los Cabos and Acapulco will be more visited.
