Efforts are being made to improve the situation of public transportation at Tulum International Airport. Sergio González Rubiera, president of the Mexican Association of Receptive Travel Agencies (Amatur), says that there seems to be progress at Tulum Airport regarding fares.
Both parties are working on proposals regarding the rates applied to tourist transportation providers from the airport. The high fees charged by the airport have led to excessive charges being passed on to travelers.
González Rubiera states that the monthly fees imposed on public transportation drivers, such as taxis, to provide their services to and from Tulum Airport are excessive compared to those in Cancun.
Since its opening in December, the airport has faced criticism due to excessively high private transportation fees. While travelers can take buses for a few hundred pesos, taxi drivers charge thousands.
Tourists traveling from Tulum Airport to the Tulum Hotel Zone are charged just over 1,500 pesos.
Sergio González says that there is progress in the discussions among the stakeholders and they are awaiting approval of the proposal by the Airport Administration Council. A meeting is scheduled for the week of June 16, at which point the proposal could be approved and transportation fares adjusted in time for summer travel.
“For the summer, there could be a competitive fare in Tulum, which is growing every day with connections to the airport, so this is very important,” he said.
