The Superior Audit Office of the Federation (ASF) has identified inconsistencies in the construction of Tulum Airport, including discrepancies in the purchase of waiting benches for 351,900 Mexican pesos (approximately 17,000 USD) and unrecorded retentions of 130,000 pesos (about 6,000 USD) for services related to welding, torque, painting of metal structures, and quality control on work fronts 2 and 4.
Additionally, the audit revealed that certain works did not comply with specifications. For instance, in work front 2, the contracts for “acquisition of ambulances for basic emergencies and intensive care” and “acquisition of a low-floor transport bus” delivered goods that differed from those specified in the technical sheets.
The ASF reported that the construction of the International Airport in Tulum did not have funds allocated in the 2023 Federation Budget. However, it was disclosed that 8,110,417,500 pesos from the Public Trust for Administration and Payment of Military Equipment were used for work fronts 1, 2, and 4, out of a total amount of 30,880,541,100 pesos.
Following the reactivation of the 933-peso access charge for tourist transport service units to Tulum International Airport, the Mexican Association of Incoming Tourism Agencies (AMATUR) will seek to negotiate more affordable rates, according to its president, Sergio González Rubiera.
