AMLO Morena party senators Block Maya Train Investigation

Senators from Morena prevented the heads of Fonatur, Profepa, Semarnat and Tourism from being called to appear by the Mayan Train.

Senators from Morena rejected proposals from the PAN, MC, and PRI in which they requested the appearances of various officials to explain alleged irregularities in environmental matters in the construction of the Mayan Train.

The first point of agreement rejected was the one presented by the PAN bench, whose legislators requested the appearance of the heads of the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur), Javier May; the head of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), Blanca Alicia Mendoza, and the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), María Luisa Albores.

“The president assured that the environment would not be damaged; however, this construction has caused much concern among specialists, biologists, environmental scientists, defense organizations and various sectors of society, such as artists, due to the multiple irregularities with which the work is built, which if not corrected could cause irreversible damage to the environment,” said Senator Mayuli Latifa Martínez.

The proposal was rejected by 47 votes against, 44 in favor and 2 abstentions.

The PAN also proposed urging Javier May, head of the construction of the Mayan Train, to convene a consultation in indigenous towns and communities regarding the change in the route of section 5 of the Mayan Train, since it was originally going to go on the federal highway. that connects Cancun with the Riviera Maya area, but was modified further inland.

In the Senate, the blue and white pointed out that if this section is built, animals and aquifers are put in danger of extinction, for which he demanded that the project be reconsidered.

Other proposals with a point of agreement were presented by Senator Verónica Delgadillo, from Movimiento Ciudadano, to request the appearance of the holders of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism and the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) before the Congress of the Union so that they make known the implications for the environment and for the public treasury of the modification of section 5 of the Mayo Train.

“How ironic it is that this president who spoke that he was going to take care of the environment, today by mere whim is focused on destroying it; how ironic it is that the president who said that the poor come first, now makes decisions that deepen poverty in a forgotten region of our country,” said the senator.

The approach had 52 votes against and 39 in favor and 4 abstentions, so it was not considered an urgent resolution.

One more proposal was from the PRI senator Manuel Añorve, who also requested appearances from the heads of Semarnat, Fonatur and the Secretary of Tourism (Sectur), Miguel Torruco.

“We are not against the construction of the Mayan Train, but we must remember history. How was the Mayan Train announced? It was announced as a monumental work that was going to promote international tourism without affecting the flora or fauna”, commented the PRI.
