The forecasts were fulfilled and as we anticipated in NITU.mx , the World Summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC, for its acronym in English) was postponed from March 24 to 26, 2021, in Cancun.

This was confirmed by the president and CEO of the WTTC, Gloria Guevara Manzo, in a conference together with the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González, and the president of Grupo Palace, José Chapur.

The WTTC World Summit was originally planned to take place in the spring of 2020, however the pandemic forced it to be moved to October. Due to responsibility with the current health situation, it is decided to move it again, said Guevara Manzo.

As announced a year ago, it will be the first time that the most important event in the tourism sector at a global level reaches Mexico and particularly Cancun, which will project the Mexican Caribbean as a safe destination to the whole world.

Gloria Guevara highlighted that since the WTTC Secure Seal was launched, Cancun and Quintana Roo were in the first round of destinations that obtained it. “They were very advanced in their protocols,” he says.

In addition to the four initiatives that will be addressed at the event, the WTTC World Summit will be the opportunity for tourism leaders, governments and key speakers from around the world to work on the recovery of the sector and on the confidence of travelers.

The event will be held at the Moon Palace Cancun hotel, which has the appropriate facilities to receive it in line with the needs and strict protocols that guarantee the safety of the attendees.

The WTTC World Summit will have a hybrid format with a limited number of in-person attendees who will arrive by exclusive invitation and it is estimated that there will be between 800 and a thousand, and a virtual part where there could be more than 20 thousand connected participants.

José Chapur stressed that the hotel’s security measures include the use of face masks, a sanitization kit is provided in the rooms, and hotels admit up to 30 percent of capacity, among others.

For his part, Governor Calos Joaquín reiterated the importance of holding this event in Cancun, due to its global significance. He highlighted the advances in health that today have the entity in a yellow traffic light, such as the low level of risk of getting sick from covid-19, hospital occupancy at 16 percent and a reduction in infections and deaths.

Regarding the recovery of tourism, the president commented that the Cancun Airport already exceeds 300 daily operations, there are also more flights to Chetumal and Cozumel, and hotel occupancy already reaches almost 50 percent.
