The arrival of sargassum has prompted early intervention with the installation of sea barriers along the coasts of Mahahual and Xcalak.

Approximately 1,850 meters of sargassum barriers will be placed in the sea by the company Darkatso. The installation of the barriers began over the weekend as anchors were placed in the seabed. The company says that 1,200 meters of barrier will be placed off the coast of Mahahual to protect its beaches, while 652 meters of the same material will be installed off the beaches of Xcalak, to the south.

Once the seabed anchors have been secured, elements from the Mexican Navy will arrive to help install the floating barriers. The barriers are being put into place before the anticipated arrival of sargassum since some of the seaweed has already begun to wash up on shores.
